So it doesn't seem like he's a momentum type of guy that he needs to play well one week in order to play well the next week. So I think Jason Day at 90-1 makes for a really nice play in the outright market because he has that potential upside.”

He's been racking up top 20s on that tour throughout the entire year. I like him. And then Matteo Manassero is probably a guy that you haven't heard much from”

“I like him. And then Matteo Manassero is probably a guy that you haven't heard much from in a long time. This is a guy who won four times by the time he's 20 years old on the DP World Tour. Recently, he's found his game. It's taken him over a decade. It's taken him about 11 years to find it, but he's found his game. He's won over there. He's got a couple other top 10 finishes, playing some really good golf. He was 15th last week at the Scottish Open, which, oh, by the way, huge correlation between Scottish Open results and Open Championship results over the last couple of years. And so Matteo Manassero for a top 20 is really nice plus money.”

It didn't really take place last year, but Detroit Golf Club, over the first five years of this golf tournament, has essentially played into the hands of the big hitters. Give me long, give me straight off the tee. Guys who use driver as a weapon are going to have the most success on this golf course at this golf tournament. Three of the winners, Bryson, Tony Finau, Cam Davis, are all guys who are known for being very, very good drivers of the golf ball. And so didn't play out that way last year with Ricky Fowler beating Colin Morikawa and Adam Hadwin in a playoff. But Ricky's still a very good driver of the golf ball. So I'm looking at guys who are very good off the tee. First on that list is Minwoo Lee. If you look at Minwoo Lee over his last five starts, you go, eh, not so good. Nothing inside the top 20. Or you look at his last five starts and you go, ah, pretty good. Everything inside the top 30. It's a statistical anomaly of the fact that Minwoo Lee has finished between 21st and 26th. In each of his last five starts, that's just kind of weird. I don't know, but he's playing good enough golf to go out and win, especially against a field like this. All of those results have been against really good fields. This one is not a really good field, as you mentioned. And so Minwoo Lee is a good place to start the card. That just blows my mind. Every time I watch him play, I'm like, this guy's really, really good and just hasn quite clicked for him over the last couple of years but he played well He just hasn played well enough I think he can win this one Davis Thompson a young kid out of the University of Georgia who finished in the top 10 at the U Open just a couple of weeks ago Watch out for this kid. He was number one in the world amateur golf rankings just a few years ago. This kid's coming, and he's coming in a hurry. He's going to be really good, and it's starting to all come together for him right now. And then a name that, if you're looking for value, I know his form isn't great. Last six starts, nothing better than a 35th place finish. But Nikolai Hoigard, we saw him play last year in the Ryder Cup for Europe. This guy's got a ton of offensive firepower. I was shocked when I saw his number. Currently at BetMGM, 66 to 1. I would have thought he'd be about half of that in this field. I think that's a great number to jump on early in the week.”

“So for me personally, I'm going to have Scotty this week, and I haven't had much Scotty this year at all. And I'm feeling a little FOMO, and I feel like I need to get on it, and maybe I'll be the jinx that everybody else needs, and Scotty will go miss the cut this week because I jumped on him. But I'm getting on Scottie. If I wasn't playing Scottie this week, I guess the top of my card would be some combination of guys just below him, which includes Xander Shoffley coming off a win of the PGA Championship, Colin Morikawa, who really played well. He won the without Scottie Scheffler market at Muirfield Village this past weekend, finishing runner-up to Scottie, playing really well. And from all reports, he was very pumped up afterwards. A lot of times a guy finishes in second, and he's pessimistic. I think he's a little down on himself. Colin was very excited about getting here this week. And then Max Homo, who's playing some better golf at the major championships over the past year. If you want to go a little bit deeper, I think it would be a name that for the casual golf fans, you'd go, wait, why is the number so big on him? For those who are paying attention, they understand. Jordan Spieth has not been playing very well this year. He's got a little bit of a wrist injury. I'm not sure how much that's affecting him on a weekly basis. but he only has one top 10 so far this year. That said, I will take Jordan Spieth at 66-1 and add him to the card just because he's a three-time major champion. I think what we have to remember, if you're putting someone on your outright card, second place doesn't matter. You're looking for the upside. You're looking for a guy that's got that massive ceiling. You want to launch it up in the air, be able to keep something on the greens this week. That's going to be important. You're going to miss greens, so you've got to have a great short game. You need to be creative. Martin Keimer won this tournament by eight shots a decade ago here at Pinehurst, number two. He didn't even use wedges around the greens. He was putting everything from around the greens. So you got to be creative. You got to think your way around this golf course. Of course, at any U.S. Open, you got to make some putts. You got to be able to make those mid-range 10, 12-foot putts to save par sometimes just to keep that round from turning the wrong direction. So that's it for you. Drive it really well. Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka, Gary Woodland, Bryce DeChambeau, Wyndham Clark, all big guys, big hitters who are strong enough to get it out of the rough. Now, this is a different kind of golf course. It doesn't really have the same rough that we've seen at previous ones. Ball striking always matters. Look, if you can hit not just good iron shots but high iron shots, these greens are going to be so firm, so fast. You want to launch it up in the air, be able to keep something on the greens this week. That's going to be important. You're going to miss greens, so you've got to have a great short game. You need to be creative. Martin Keimer won this tournament by eight shots a decade ago here at Pinehurst, number two. He didn't even use wedges around the greens. He was putting everything from around the greens. So you got to be creative. You got to think your way around this golf course. Of course, at any U.S. Open, you got to make some putts. You got to be able to make those mid-range 10, 12-foot putts to save par sometimes just to keep that round from turning the wrong direction. So that's it for you. Drive it really well. Hit great iron shots. be creative around the greens and make some butts. That's essentially golf right there. So like I said, this is going to be a terrible answer, but that's what it is. Cameron Smith was absolutely terrible yesterday in Houston at the live event, shot 80, made four doubles and a triple. I have absolutely no idea what that was about, but I'm going to bank on that being an outlier round and hope that that just raises the price a little bit. Corey Conners, ball striker supreme, been waiting for him to step up and win something bigger than a Valero Texas open. Not sure he can win this week, but he's such a good ball striker. Christian Bezadenhout has a great short game like him as well. The Irons have been better this year. Alex Noren has been fantastic. Billy Horschel has a win, and ever since that win, has been playing really good golf. Ryan Fox on a fast, firm golf course is a guy that I always target. Akshay Batia grew up not too far away in Raleigh. He's a guy that could do some damage. And Nick Dunlap, I mentioned the North and South Amateur. He won the U.S. Amateur last year, but he also won the North and South, played right here at Pioneer. So on a golf course where many of these players, I mean, like Rory McIlroy, I believe, has never played this golf tournament, this golf course in competition. Tiger Woods missed the one in 14, so he hasn't played here in 19 years. I mean, there's been a lot of guys who just don't have much experience. You look at experience, you almost look at some of the younger guys who played some of those amateur events here at Pinehurst, number two. If you want to go a little bit deeper, I think it would be a name that for the casual golf fans, you'd go, wait, why is the number so big on him? For those who are paying attention, they understand. “Look, I like Rory here. He's played some good golf over the years. Look, he's played some really good golf over the years at Muirfield Village. Just based on Rory's baseline, I don't think I'm going to chase him here. He's never won in, I believe, 12 tries at this golf course. So to think that it's going to happen this week, could it? Sure. Am I paying up to find out? No, probably not. Same thing for Xander Shoffley. Xander Shoffley essentially plays well pretty much everywhere he goes, but doesn't play great at this one. And so I'm actually looking right below the two of those guys to Collin Morikawa, who's played some really good golf. Look, if you look at Morikawa's record at this one, you won't see that he won in 2020 because he won something called the Workday Charity Open. That was during COVID when they didn't really know exactly where to hold tournaments, when to hold tournaments. They said, you know what? We're just going to go to Muirfield Village for two weeks. And so they played the week before the memorial. He won that one in a playoff over Justin Thomas. You also, if you just do a little soft research, won't find that Collin Morikawa played really well here last year. Why? Because he withdrew prior to the final round. He He was only two back going into Sunday, started warming up on Sunday for his final round, had back spasms, withdrew from the golf tournament. So again, you don't know if you're not kind of remembering and you're not diving deeper into that research, but Morikawa's got a great record here. “a memorial? Yeah, so it's actually it was pretty clear for me. There are a lot of weeks. Last week's a great example. RBC Canadian Open. I went up and down the board. I'm like, there's like 18 guys that I kind of like. No one that I love. No one that I hate. So I thought that was a really tough one. This one, more clear cut for me. It starts with Morikawa. Then I've got a bunch of guys in this mid-tier. Sahith Thigala is a guy that I've liked at this golf course the last few years. He was fifth place two years ago. Really disappointing last year. But if you look at the numbers across the board, playing some great golf right now. I know he ran out of steam at the PGA Championship, but he'd been dealing with an illness all week, missed the cut last week. That's okay, playing some really good golf. Keegan Bradley does not have a great record at this golf tournament, but boy, Keegan Bradley is playing some great golf right now. It's a little strange, a little curious that he doesn't have a better record because he's one of the longer straight drivers or one of the straighter long drivers, however you want to put it, on the PGA Tour. and this is a place where you can absolutely eat it up if you're driving it well, and he usually does. Ben Onn is another guy who's probably priced a little too short for me in the outright marketplace because he doesn't win golf tournaments, but he should finish in the top 10. He's got top fives in each of his or two of his last three starts. And the last guy, and again, this one's just number hunting a little, but he's starting to play some better golf. Tony Finau is not a name that we've looked at too often this year, but that number is creeping up to 50 to one at bed MGM. That's a big number for me. I will chase Tony Finau at that number. Essentially a world-class iron player who can see a little spike week with his putter. He actually putted a little bit better than Zalatorre and finishing in fifth place last year. I like Tony a lot for a U.S. Open type of setup. He's got the right attitude. Like I was just saying, I think he's a good play. Max Homa is a guy who hasn't played majors well in the past, but he's he's literally getting better every single week. And you can tell the confidence on his face like this is a guy that's improving right before our eyes. He won the Wells Fargo championship about a month ago. And I think there's a nice little correlation. That was a tough Northeast golf course. I think you can look at that one and say, I think some players from that leaderboard will show up on this one. Max Oma is a guy who was 13th of the PGA championship last month. That his best career major finish I like him a few notches higher for a top 10 this week And then Matt Fitzpatrick is a great player this week Matt Fitzpatrick won the 2013 U Amateur right here at the Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts. Plays his best golf on tougher golf courses when the winning score is closer in relation to part. Oh, by the way, he's number two. He was number one for most of the season in total strokes gained on the PGA Tour. Rory McIlroy just went past him this past weekend, but he's a close second. Essentially that measures who's playing the best golf. I know Fitzpatrick hasn't won anything this season, but he's been very, very good. Uh, just to, to give people some context, uh, Matt Fitzpatrick, 25 to one outright about plus two 10, two to one for top 10. Tony Finau, 35 to 1 plus 320 for top 10. Are we talking like super random dudes for top 40s, or you're talking like, hey, a guy with a big number that has a chance of winning? big number chance of winning always okay i'm gonna start off with i i told you guys i took a little spin around this golf course yesterday i'm trying to find like a great comparison golf course excuse me to to what this looks like and the best i can come up with is marion marion golf club a famous course ben hogan's one iron we all know the story last held the u.s opened in 2013 the guy who won that week just happened to shoot the a couple days ago, probably should have shot a 50-70, made three bogeys and shot 60 in Canada. That's Justin Rose. The number has moved. I think you could have gotten him before that 60 at right around 80 or maybe even 100 to 1 in some books. I think Rose is down to 65 to 1 in a lot of places right now. I still like the number. I still think there's some win equity there. He's playing some very good golf. Yeah, he's not the same player in his prime as he was at Marion back nine years ago, but I do think he can go out and still win this golf tournament.”

“All right. We did top 10. We're going to do top five. And then Simon is going to ask you for your outrights. after I give everybody the right context for who's got the shortest odds right now. Give me your top five. Okay. So guys, the top five that I like now giving up my favorite outright play. Look, a couple of them are very chalky. I've got Justin Thomas, Rory McIlroy. They're both right at the top of the leaderboard this past weekend. Rory wound up winning. Good for golf. Good for the PGA Tour. Everyone celebrates. Look, Rory's playing some of the best golf that we've seen him play in an awful long time. We talk about confidence. We talk about let's look beyond the analytical models and let's look at a guy and understand what we're seeing from him. Rory is absolutely brimming with confidence right now, both on and off the golf course. He is a must watch golfer on the course. He's a must watch interview off the golf course. He's just he's fire on all cylinders and all facets of what his job is right now. And so love Rory this week. Love Justin Thomas. I was coming to the course today with a couple of PGA tour pros who, who are working on the radio side, us open championship radio with me this week. And they were talking about Justin Thomas who has every shot in the bag. They said no other player in the world right now can flight the ball. However they want like Justin Thomas he wants to hit a low cut He it a low cut He wants to hit to hit a high draw He can do it from 60 yards He can do it from 230 yards He got this variety of shots that's going to work really well for him. So again, those aren't names from off the board that you haven't heard. Daniel Berger isn't getting enough love in the marketplace yet this week. Daniel Berger is a guy who often comes up to New England in the summer. He's sort of this de facto New Englander. His old pro Matt Doyle is at the Musquamacut Club in Rhode Island. He goes up there and practices. He's played ball at the Travelers Championship just a couple hours down the road in Connecticut. I think it's going to be a good week for Berger. I might not have said that a few weeks ago because he was dealing with some injuries, some inconsistencies, but he finished the share of fifth place at the Memorial Tournament. That's a really tough one. This is going to be tough as well. I think his game really suits this golf course. Daniel Berger, eight to one for a top five. Rory, plus 225. Justin Thomas, plus 275. The Travelers, mere minutes from West Hartford. I'll be there in a few days.”

So first of all, those names mentioned, Xander Shoffley and Patrick Cantlay, those numbers are very, very intriguing. I think it's going to be a good week for both of them. Cantlay has played some of his worst golf in the majors over the last year or so. I think people are going to be scared off. I think that's kept his number from being too short. I think it's a really good number for him. He's better than where he's being priced at. That said you didn mention my guy who a little bit lower down the board Shane Lowry is playing some of the best golf of his life so far this year 12 starts in 2022 nothing worse than 35th And really it his all around game He driving it well. The irons are solid, soft hands around the greens. He makes some putts. He's got the right attitude for US Open. He was runner up to Dustin Johnson at Oakmont back in 2016. and so I like an Irishman in Boston who would think that that could ever go well but I really do think Shane Lowry can uh can go and take this thing this week even though he won the Open Championship a few years ago at Royal Portrush I've always thought he's probably got a better chance of winning a U.S. Open I think he's a better U.S. Open player than even the Open Championship where he's from and quite frankly guys maybe I'm just rooting for it not only for my own personal benefit, but that celebration for Shane Lowry here in Boston Sunday night, that could be a pretty damn good party. Shane Lowry currently 30 to one to win the U.S. Open.”

“All right, so I should set the odds, set the table before I ask you right off the top who your pick is going to be. I don't want to, you know, I don't want to delay. Before I give you my pick, I want to go through these odds just a little bit. You mentioned all those. Instead of having one dominant player, instead of we for so long would come to Augusta every year, and Tiger Woods, the prohibitive favorite, and anyone else who's out there, you can get a pretty good price on them because Tiger was such a favorite. He was so dominant at this golf course. Now, we've essentially got, I think there are 12 players right now. I believe a dozen players, depending on the book you look at, shop around, of course, but I believe 12 players who are 20 to 1 or shorter this week, which makes it, first of all, really tough. There's a lot of parity out there. But secondly, it gives you a lot of decent options, I think. So you can look around my favorite of that bunch this week is Brooks Koepka.”

“So you can look around my favorite of that bunch this week is Brooks Koepka. I was not a believer, Chad, after his first major championship, that he could just go out and play his best golf at a major. That was back in 2017, almost five full years ago. I just thought, okay, well, he had a good week. He won a major. Then he did it twice in 2018. And finally after the third one, I said, you know what? This guy's got a lot of ego, a lot of hubris, a lot of confidence, maybe even cockiness and maybe he can just show up at majors kind of flip the switch and say all right I'm ready to go play some some great golf right now and he does it and so I you know he he is essentially the epitome of what Tiger Woods has said for years which is I want my game to peak four times per year and I've spent the last 10-15 years asking world-class players about how do you get your game to peak my favorite answer was Jason Day was I don't know he's kind shrugged at me because you know it's not like if I'm playing really well in my last event before the masters that I try to play worse so that I can play better two weeks later it doesn't really work that way so Brooks Koepka has figured out a way to get his game to peak for major championships I look at a week that we're going to have where it's going to be warm then it's going to be wet then it's going to be windy then it's going to be cold mother nature bringing in all different kinds of elements. He deals with those elements really, really well, just sort of shrugs them off. I like Kepka If you asked me a few weeks ago a lot of people did Patrick Cantlay was a top by list Recent form is not quite where I want it to be That said I only lowered him to number two in my ranking So I going Koepka and then Cantley for my favorite two plays this week So why does form not matter for Koepka, but it does matter for Cantley?”

“The start before that at the Players, he was right there in contention, played in the final group or second to last group on that Monday afternoon before shooting the final round 76 The kid is really really talented 25 years old The only thing I can find in that why he is why his odds are as long as they are is the fact that he hasn played this event before in past. So we all know no masters rookie has won this event since fuzzy Zeller back in 1979. It's been an awfully long time. It doesn't mean they can't do it though. I mentioned Will Zalatoris earlier. I mentioned Jordan Spieth who took to this event very quickly. I can see Sam Burns jumping out there, playing really well on Thursday and then playing well throughout the weekend. So I like him for outrights. I've bet him already for outrights. Really like him for first-round leader, though, because he's a quick starter. Finished 16th on the PGA Tour last season in round one scoring average. He's 12th already this season. Plays well on Thursdays. Plays well usually on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays as well. So he's a guy that I like for full tournament, but especially first-round leader bets.”

Sungjae Im led after round one at 67 (-5) at the 2022 Masters; Sam Burns was not the first-round leader.

“And so those of us who do, we're almost at a disadvantage for this one because we'll look at Tony Finau this year and go, well, his best finish is a share of 19th place. That was three months ago at a shortened field and the ball striking numbers are okay, but they're not great. And he really hasn't done much since that win in the FedEx cup playoffs last year. And it's been a while now. And those who sort of helicopter in and only pay attention to the majors, we'll look at a big number next to Tony Finau's name and go, ah, he's good.”

Tony Finau finished T35 (+6) at the 2022 Masters, outside the top 10.

“Then for a top 20, if I was to tell you guys the best ball striker, the best iron player on the PGA Tour. so far this season is not Colin Morikawa. It's not Justin Thomas, not Will Zalatorris. It's Russell Henley. And Russell Henley is a guy who's due for what a lot of people call the positive regression, sort of the oxymoronic term that always comes out in the analytics world, which is essentially I look at him like a major league baseball pitcher who's 7-12 with a 270 ERA. And you say at some point, look, the numbers are there. He's pitching well. He's just not getting the help. He's not getting the luck. I mean, Henley's a guy who last year at the Wyndham Championship led for three and a half rounds, wound up missing a putt to get into a playoff and finished in T7. That's never happened before in the last 20 years. The fact that you could lose by one and not cash a top five ticket. Henley's had a whole lot of bad luck like that over the last couple of years. I think that he's due for some good luck. I've got them just for a top 20 this week, but top 10 wouldn't surprise me whatsoever.”

And the reason is, you know, there's, there's a nice little narrative going at Muirfield Village where young players who certainly aren't surprises over the last few years, but have used this, guys we know are going to be stars, have used this event or at least this venue as a stepping stone to bigger and better things. Bryson in 18, Patrick Cantley in 19. Last year, I don't know that you put Jon Rahm on that list. He doesn't really fit. Kind of. I mean, you know, maybe if he wins the U.S. Open this year, we'd say, hey, Memorial's like the big one before that. Yes. Give you another one. Hideki Matsuyama. Yeah, he one of his first wins in his career was at the Memorial Tournament as well. There you go. And I was going to throw in Colin Morikawa, who, of course, won the work day last year, but still at the same venue. And, you know, of course, won a PGA Championship not long after that. And so looking for an up and coming young stud who we all know is going to be a star and is playing well. Victor Hovland is my guy.”

Well, they had the baby on Sunday. He was able to be with them for a day or two and then come here to Augusta and should be fine. And in fact, that's the exact same scenario that Danny Willett had five years ago. Looked like he was going to miss this event. Boy was born early and he made it and he made history. So I do like those parallels for Jon Rahm this week. And so, yeah, I, within a four and a half hour span where I wasn't even awake, my first pick changed.”

I've known Matt Kuchar for a long time. He's very far from an awful person. Might not have handled that situation perfectly, but he is not a bad guy whatsoever. Then he had a situation where he didn't give a putt to Sergio Garcia. The match play was like two inches away, and Sergio went and kind of raked it and didn't make it. And then Kuchar, again, not his fault, but didn't really play it the right way. He had a drop situation at the Memorial where he asked for a drop that no other player would ask for. He asked for a ruling, didn't get it, but still on TV for 15 minutes talking about the situation, and he didn't look good. That said, that's all the bad stuff. All the good stuff is he's probably having the best year of his career. He's got a couple wins already this season. He's, I believe, number one on the FedExCup points list right now. So he's playing really, really good golf. He's played really well at the Open the last couple of years. I remember he was second to Jordan Stee two years ago at Birkdale. He came in ninth last year at Carnoustie, so he understands how to play these types of golf courses So I like Matt Kuchar a lot Long answer to say I like him”
